Graston Technique
Graston Technique was conceived by an athlete who suffered a debilitating knee injury while water skiing. Frustrated by the lack of progress he was having after surgery and various types of rehab, he applied his professional background in machining to create the first Graston tool. Initially this technique was used mainly on athletes at very high levels. After some research showed how effective this technique can be for anybody experiencing muscle pain or myofascial pain. Graston is used by more than 120 major professional and amateur sports organizations as well as several private practice Chiropractors, physical therapists and athletic trainers.
Graston works on a area of the body called fascia. Fascia can develop small “knots” in it much like a muscle gets large knots. This is comparable to scar tissue and like any scar tissue on the surface of your skin, it is tight and not freely moveable. Graston Technique is an instrument assisted technique that enables a certified clinician to break down the scar tissue and fascial adhesions. The stainless steel tools used in Graston Technique allow the clinician to find areas of pain and dysfunction easily and remove adhesions in a very short amount of time.
Graston sessions are quick usually lasting between 2-10 minutes. The recommended frequency of treamtment is 2 times a week for an average of 4-5 weeks. Many patients notice a significant change in pain level by the 3rd or 4th treatment. Some patients will feel the results of treatment right away depending on how quickly they seek treatment after symptoms begin.
